Security personnel (Satpam) play a central role as the frontline guardians of an integrated security system. The main task of Satpam members is to ensure security and order in the workplace and its surroundings, covering aspects of physical security, personnel, information, and other technical security measures. They also protect the community in the workplace and its surroundings.
In addition to performing manned guarding functions, Satpam can also serve as ambassadors for a company. As a frontline guardian, Satpam is a crucial element in the hospitality aspect of a company. Therefore, the persona of Satpam is essential to consider, and one of the main aspects shaping this persona is the uniform.
Former Satpam Uniform: In the past, Satpam uniforms were generally white with the Satpam logo on the front pocket. The uniform color varied, ranging from white tops and dark blue pants for building or company security, to dark blue for field assignments. This uniform was established more than 40 years ago, and the blue-and-white uniform has been the common perception of Satpam.
However, over time, the uniform color has undergone many changes. What influenced these changes, and what are the main reasons for altering the color and uniform of these security personnel?
First Uniform Color Change: After more than 40 years with the white-blue uniform, it changed for the first time in early 2021, as regulated by Article 45 of the National Police Chief Regulation No. 4 of 2020. The new uniform color is light brown for the upper part and dark brown for the lower part. One reason for choosing brown is to create emotional closeness between Satpam and the police. This uniform color aims to evoke a sense of safety in society, as the police, with their brown uniforms, have become the primary symbol of law enforcement.
The similarity in uniform colors between the police and Satpam makes people feel safer and more at ease when traveling to a place. However, there are still some differences that can be noticed upon closer inspection, such as the symbols on the uniforms.
Second Uniform Color Change: The difficulty people faced in distinguishing Satpam and police uniforms led to another change in Satpam uniform color. The National Police once again changed the Satpam uniform, introducing a new color during the 41st anniversary celebration held in Jakarta on February 2, 2022. The new uniform is cream-colored with dark brown bottoms.
Interestingly, this new uniform sparked many comments from the public, with people saying it resembles the police uniform in India, where the top is cream/khaki, and the bottoms are typically khaki or dark brown. The new Satpam uniform usually includes regional symbols where they are assigned and the company emblem on the left sleeve, with the Satpam emblem on the front.
Nawakara Security: Nawakara, as one of the private security service providers in Indonesia, consistently supports and complies with the latest Satpam uniform regulations. Beyond being the frontline of security, Nawakara believes that Satpam can be a valuable asset to a company as the frontline of service. This is part of the integrated Plan-Prevent-Protect framework.
